Buffy

I never really watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I was more of an MTV person. I found it extremely hard to watch Buffy due to the fact that all I could think about was Alyson Hannigan in American Pie and Sarah Michelle Gellar in Cruel Intentions. As everyone knows both of those movies are pretty dirty and clips from both of them kept running through my head while watching Buffy. It was slightly weird to see those two women playing the role of teenage girls. Even though Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Graceling don’t have much in common the two main characters do. Katsa and Buffy are both teenage girls who are lacking a “normal” life. Katsa kills or harms people when the king orders her to and Buffy kills vampires. They are both young but very mature in certain ways for their age. In society it is unusual for females to play to role of the protector but both of these girls do it as if it’s their duty to do so. Because of this they escape the stereotypical views of women and that gives the teenage viewers a sense of empowerment. Most importantly both Katsa and Buffy have a massive amount of physical strength and could harm whoever they’d like but they control themselves.

  1. I would have to agree, it is funny seeing them have those roles considering what other roles they eventually play. Although, we can't forget Sarah playing Daphney in Scooby Doo haha.
Nonetheless, I think she played a appropriate role. She was the pretty blonde cheerleader who is extremely badass. She went out of the norm to become something that every younger girl could admirer, a protecter. Just like in the book, she is a younger girl who shows that anyone could be anything that they want to be. Even if it is by choice.
Actually, as much as this shows anyone that they could be what they want to be, Buffy did not want this. Though, she did accept it. Which is also what I like about Buffy the Vampire slayer, she accepted what she couldn't change. Another very good role for younger girls just figuring out who they are and what they will become.
I also like how you addressed that they have all this power yet control themselves. This is another message that ANYONE could learn from whether the age or sex.
This is why I like books like these, they show anyone that they can be what they want to be, acceptance of who they are and even control.
Every character, whether it was in the book or in the TV show goes through some sort of personality change, basically they grow in front of us. I also like this because we can see the problems that they have faced and how they became to what they are.
I have a lot more to say but I thought I would keep this short, I'm glad you posted this blog. =]

  2. Excellent posts! Taking the opposite side, how might we see Katsa and Buffy as limited by being girls?
